Freebie Friday – Michael Pollan’s Book

Day #13

“Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion – most of what we’re consuming today is no longer the product of nature but of food science.”

- from In Defense of Food

The day the 1950′s project ended, I hung up my skirts, tossed my heals to the back of the closet, and went back to life as usual. I doubt I will be able to end this project so abruptly.

Unfortunately, I’ve learned something.

I try to avoid learning as much as possible, but I’ve stumbled upon Michael Pollan’s books and they are too interesting to ignore. His revelations are too disgusting, eye-opening, and provocative to dump in the back of my brain

Exploring the question, “Where does my food come from?” turns out to be a fascinating journey. Before this project, I thought it would be too difficult to prepare meals in a health conscious and earth friendly way. I considered those endeavors to be for college students who wear hemp necklaces and have too much time on their hands.

But Michael Pollan has simplified this idea for me. He wanted to make it easy to be maximally healthy while still enjoying food and living a normal life.

He has made these goals attainable with THREE simple rules:

1. Eat food (real food, not chemicals and fake food coloring swirled together to look like food)

2. Mostly plants (eating meat is not going to kill you, but treat meat as a side dish rather than the main course)

3. Not too much (When you eat nutritious foods, you should feel satisfied with less)

Pollan says, “My aim in this book is to help us reclaim our health and happiness as eaters.” If you are interested in reading more, let me know! The freebie this week is Michael Pollan’s book, “In Defense of Food.”

To be entered to win it, just leave a comment on the blog. To be entered again, post the following status update on Facebook and/or Twitter (just let me know if you post on FB or Twitter).

Freebie Friday – Sweat free Tumbler

Day #7

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”

- Michael Pollan

I can’t say I have followed Michael Pollan’s advice. For the past few days, I have been drinking my food (carrots, beets, apples, oranges, cucumbers, kiwi). Yes, I’ve fallen prey to the infomercials.

You know you’ve stopped to watch the Jack LaLanne Juicer commercials. You’ve seen an entire apple (seeds and all) morph into a delicious, nutritious snack in mere seconds. You’ve considered paying three easy installments of $49.99.

Well, I didn’t call the 1-800 number, but my eyes grew big when I walked into a kitchen store with an “As Seen on TV” section. They carried the juicer. I had to have it!

If I were nicer and richer, I would give away a juicer, but the first give-away during this fifty day experiment is an essential must-have for people trying to drink more water or healthy juices for New Year. It’s a cup that will not sweat on your desk, coffee table, or car. It’s dishwasher safe and let’s just face it, anything with a straw is fun.

To enter to win, just leave a comment on this blog post anytime before Monday, January 10th at 4:00 PM.

Freebie Friday Cute Jars

Day #44

“Water may be added to fruit until it can be seen through the top layer
but fruit must never float in water.”

The Joy of Cooking, 1949

I finally did two things today that I have been telling myself I would do:

- I made Plum Jelly all by myself.
- I started reading Julie & Julia (actually, I’m listening to the book on my iPod, but it’s the same as reading).

So many people have told me, “You have got to see Julie & Julia. Your project reminds me of that movie!” But I have not wanted to see it because I was afraid I would inadvertantly copy it. But now, forty-four days into the project, I think it’s okay to check it out.

I can see why people say that the 1950′s Project is similar. First, I am blogging about cooking (among other things). Second, Julie seems very scatterbrained, and I can relate to that. Third, she seems to be discovering the joy of cooking during a time when cooking is underrated and underappreciated. And lastly, she enjoys connecting with people though the blog in a way that gives her little life some significance and excitement.

She talks about rushing home to make French cuisine and noticing a spring in her step as she anticipates cooking. I can relate to that! I was so excited when I woke up this morning because I knew today was the day I got to make Plum Jelly. It seems so simple, but there is a level of anticipation that comes when you know you get to try something new. And I am always interested in hearing if other people have the same feeling.

Do you ever get excited about the thought of cooking a meal, dessert, or something else?

I think I will enjoy jelly making even more after I receive the cute jars I ordered. So, the freebie this week is a set of designer glass jars for jam, jelly, or preserves. Take a look:

Freebie Friday – Peach Pickin’

Day #12

“If strangers move into a neighborhood, it is not only unfriendly, but uncivil
for their neighbors not to call on them.”
Emily Post, Etiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage, 1937

It seems like this blog has become my housewife confessional. Well, I have another one today. Recently, a sweet, young couple moved into the house beside us… And I never took them a plate of cookies.

No homemade banana bread.

No pineapple upside down cake.

And if that is not enough, she was pregnant when they moved in, and now she has had the baby for about six weeks. I still have not brought them a meal.

No fresh picked flowers.

No balloons.

So, today, I will be a good neighbor and a good 1950′s wife, and bring her some nourishment, whether she wants it or not. My grandmother assures me that she would walk over to her friend’s house without a phone call in advance, but I think I should call first.

The beauty of bringing her a treat today is that I have already made tons of strawberry jelly and peach jelly with the leftover fruit from my other projects. Yesterday, I went to Gardener Farms to pick peaches, and this morning, I made the jelly. So, my project today is to deliver her biscuits and homemade jelly. That way, she can have a good breakfast whenever she wants it.

For those of you who live in the Atlanta Area, we have another freebie! By leaving a comment on today’s blog (about neighbors, homemade goodies, jams, jellies, picking fruit, or anything that makes your heart go pitter pat) your name will be entered to win a free Peach Pickin’ at Gardner Farms. If you post the following status on Facebook or Twitter, your name will be entered again. Please let me know if you post the update:

Feel free to comment and post until Monday, June 21st at 4:00 PM. I will draw for the winner then!

Happy Pickin!

A Dibble of This, A Dash of That

Day #8 – June 14, 2010

“Measure accurately, using standard measuring cups and spoons.”
Chapter 7, Page 3 of Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, 1949

Am I the only one who needs a translator when cooking with my grandmother? This weekend, after preparing the potato salad with Mima Peggy, I made devilled eggs with Mima Sara. Here is a snippet from our conversation:

Mima Sara: “First you have to boil the eggs.”

Emily: “Okay, how long should we boil them?”

Mima Sara: “Only three or four minutes. Then, cover ‘em and let ‘em sit until they are done.”

Emily: “How long would you say that will take?”

Mima: “Oh, just a little while.”

Emily: How long is a little while?

Mima:”You know, just long enough for them to get done.”

Emily: “Never mind. I’ll look that up online. So, what next?”

Mima: “We’ll peel the eggs and seperate the whites from the yolks.”

Emily: “Okay, how many eggs should we use?”

Mima: “As many as you want to make.”

Emily: “But, how many do you use?”

Mima: “As many as I need.”

Emily: “Why do I feel like this conversation is going nowhere? Let’s say that we use eight eggs. Then, what?”

Mima: “Now, we add the mustard.”

Emily: “How much mustard?”

Mima: “Just a dibble.”

Emily: “How much is a dibble?”

Mima: “More than a pinch and less than a heap.”

Emily: “I guess we will add a dibble of mayonaise, too.”

Mima: “No, we need more than a dibble of mayonaise. We need at least a couple spoon fulls of mayo.”

Emily: “What size spoon?”

Mima: “Whatever size you have in the kitchen.”

Emily: “Oh my goodness. My head hurts. Do we need anything else?”

Mima: “Just some salt and pepper.”

Emily: “Should we add a pinch, or a dibble, or a heap, or a spoonful?”

Mima: “You just add salt and pepper until it tastes right.”

So, Let’s recap….

1. Get as many eggs as you need.

2. Boil them until they are done.

3. Peel and seperate the white from the yolk.

4. Add a dibble of mustard.

5. Add a few spoonfuls of mayonaise.

6. Mix and add salt and pepper until it tastes right.

7. Spoon the mixture into your egg whites and hope for the best! Actually, Mima’s measurements were perfect. The devilled eggs were delicious. Thanks, Mima, for teaching me kitchen lingo!

As Mima says, “It’s as clear as mud now.”

On another note, Dee helped me draw for the winner of the Free Blackberry Pickin’ at Southern Belle Farms. Congratulations to Phyllis Finazzo! And thank you to Southern Belle for your support.
