Cure Your Cold Naturally

Day #16

I am not a doctor.

I am not a pharmacist or naturopath.

I don’t have any letters behind my name, but I have discovered a natural way to cure colds. This is one vegan, all-natural, granola thing I did before this experiment. I don’t have anything to prove it works other than my own experience, but believe me, it works.

As a teacher, I catch my fair share of colds, and over the years, I have developed six rules for getting better. These rules are based on the common sense notion that when your body gets sick, it is fighting a battle to get well again, and we can arm our bodies with proper weapons to win.

1. ADMIT IT – Start curing your cold the minute you feel a tickle in your throat. Most people deny that anything is happening until they are awake in the middle of the night, coughing, sneezing, and reaching for the Mucinex. By this point, it’s too late for natural remedies. You are in pain, and you need instant relief. Early detection (i.e. avoiding denial) is the best strategy to shorten the effect of the cold.

2. GREEN TEA – If you feel that twinge of a cough, heat the water. From now until you get better, you will be drinking green tea. This is the main ingredient in my all natural cure. The antioxidants help your body fight back and the warm water feels nice going down your throat.

3. BERRIES – For more antioxidants, eat berries all day. Sometimes, I eat an entire container of blueberries in one sitting. Fill your body with dark berries that are rich in nutrients.

4. SLEEP - This is the most difficult part for many people. Give in to your cold early. Sleep in a dark room when you get home from work. You won’t get the same healing effect by sitting awake in front of the TV. I actually think this will make you feel worse. Take a quiet nap in your bed and then go to bed early each night until you are well.

5. FRESH AIR – Get out and walk through the neighborhood or sit on your porch to inhale air that’s not stale. I have no idea why this works. I tried it after watching a lady on television who shared how she cured cancer naturally. One of her tips included sitting on the porch and breathing fresh air for two hours a day.

6. LIGHT MEALS – Finally, avoid heavy meals. Don’t give your body extra work to do by stuffing it with roast beef, french fries, and a chocolate shake. Keep your food intake light.

Easton and I both have a cold right now, and I am implementing my natural cure… minus the sleep thing. Since I am waking up with Easton three of four times at night, I won’t be able to give in completely to my need for sleep. That will slow down the process considerably.

But I am drinking my green tea right now. Let me know if you have stumbled upon any natural remedies I should try.

Day #13

The day the 1950′s project ended, I hung up my skirts, tossed my heals to the back of the closet, and went back to life as usual. I doubt I will be able to end this project so abruptly.

Unfortunately, I’ve learned something.

I try to avoid learning as much as possible, but I’ve stumbled upon Michael Pollan’s books and they are too interesting to ignore. His revelations are too disgusting, eye-opening, and provocative to dump in the back of my brain

Exploring the question, “Where does my food come from?” turns out to be a fascinating journey. Before this project, I thought it would be too difficult to prepare meals in a health conscious and earth friendly way. I considered those endeavors to be for college students who wear hemp necklaces and have too much time on their hands.

But Michael Pollan has simplified this idea for me. He wanted to make it easy to be maximally healthy while still enjoying food and living a normal life.

He has made these goals attainable with THREE simple rules:

1. Eat food (real food, not chemicals and fake food coloring swirled together to look like food)

2. Mostly plants (eating meat is not going to kill you, but treat meat as a side dish rather than the main course)

3. Not too much (When you eat nutritious foods, you should feel satisfied with less)

Conscious Eating

Day #12 – January 12, 2011

Industrial eating.

This is a new term for me.

Michael Pollan has introduced me to so many new terms, thoughts, and ideas. The bliss of eating a steak in complete ignorance is over for me. I am not saying this is the beginning of a lifetime of vegetarian food; I am just certain I cannot completely go back to the way I ate before. Two books have contributed to this decision:

- The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food, both by Michael Pollan

Since not everyone has time to read these, I thought I would make a list of the top concepts mentioned in these by these books. That way, if your interest is piqued, you can check them out more thoroughly yourself.

Quotes from The Omnivore’s Dilemma

- “You are what you eat, it’s often said, and if that’s true, then we are mostly corn – or more precisely, processed corn.”

Advice from In Defense of Food:

- Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. (Or don’t eat anything that doesn’t rot.)

- Avoid food products that make health claims.

- Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle.

- Get out of the supermarket whenever possible– shake the hand that feeds you.

- Eat mostly plants, especially leaves.

- You are what what you eat eats too.

- If you have the space, buy a freezer. (When you find a good source of pastured meat, you’ll want to buy it in quantity).

- Eat like an omnivore.

- Eat well-grown food from healthy soils.

- Eat wild foods when you can.

- Be the kind of person who takes supplements.

- Eat more like the French. Or the Italians. Or the Japanese. Or the Indians. Or the Greeks.

- Regard nontraditional foods with skepticism.

Freebie Friday – Sweat free Tumbler

Day #7

I can’t say I have followed Michael Pollan’s advice. For the past few days, I have been drinking my food (carrots, beets, apples, oranges, cucumbers, kiwi). Yes, I’ve fallen prey to the infomercials.

You know you’ve stopped to watch the Jack LaLanne Juicer commercials. You’ve seen an entire apple (seeds and all) morph into a delicious, nutritious snack in mere seconds. You’ve considered paying three easy installments of $49.99.

Well, I didn’t call the 1-800 number, but my eyes grew big when I walked into a kitchen store with an “As Seen on TV” section. They carried the juicer. I had to have it!

If I were nicer and richer, I would give away a juicer, but the first give-away during this fifty day experiment is an essential must-have for people trying to drink more water or healthy juices for New Year. It’s a cup that will not sweat on your desk, coffee table, or car. It’s dishwasher safe and let’s just face it, anything with a straw is fun.
